HARRISON FORD OWNS AN 800-ACRE WYOMING RETREAT

Posted on September 2, 2026September 2, 2026 by Adorable Living Spaces

Long before Harrison Ford stepped into the boots of rancher Jacob Dutton in 1923, the Hollywood legend had already made 800 acres of Wyoming wilderness a major part of his real life.

Ford has maintained the sprawling property outside Jackson, Wyoming, since the 1980s. The land sits near the Tetons and Snake River and includes streams, woods and important wildlife habitat. Ford himself has described it as a former ranch rather than a working cattle operation, saying that he sees himself as the steward of a piece of nature.

HE CHOSE CONSERVATION OVER DEVELOPMENT

What makes the property particularly interesting isn’t simply its size.

Beginning in 1985, Ford donated a series of conservation easements covering substantial portions of his land. Those protections restrict development that could damage its wildlife habitat and natural resources.

AARP has reported that almost half of the 800-acre property was set aside for conservation. The land provides refuge for wildlife, including elk, while the surrounding Jackson Hole landscape is known for the Snake River and spectacular Teton scenery.

HIS HOME IS SURPRISINGLY MODEST

For someone who became one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, Ford didn’t create the kind of extravagant mansion many people might expect.

A 1990 Vanity Fair profile described his Wyoming home as an unassuming two-story white clapboard house, surrounded by evergreens and cottonwoods. At the time, Ford spoke openly about placing land under an easement even though doing so could reduce its development value.

The property gave him something Hollywood couldn’t easily provide: room, privacy and a direct connection to nature.

AND THEN HOLLYWOOD TURNED HIM INTO A RANCHER

Decades later, Ford was cast as Jacob Dutton in 1923, part of the Yellowstone universe.

The connection is almost perfect: the man audiences now recognize as a rugged television rancher had already spent decades living on hundreds of acres in Wyoming.

But Ford makes an important distinction. He has said that he doesn’t raise cattle on the property. Instead, the land is filled with wildlife, streams and woods — and preserving that environment has been a major priority.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF HOLLYWOOD PROPERTY

Many celebrity real-estate stories are about enormous mansions, luxury pools and record-breaking prices.

Harrison Ford’s Wyoming story is different.

It’s about 800 acres, wildlife, conservation and protecting open land from future development — a decision he began making roughly four decades ago.

And perhaps that’s the most interesting part: long before Hollywood cast Harrison Ford as a rancher, he’d already chosen the Wyoming landscape as his escape from Hollywood.

Would you choose 800 acres in Wyoming over a mansion in Los Angeles?
