In the Pacific Northwest, a couple built a pretty unique off grid cabin. The fascinating thing about it is that they managed to build it with only $300. The materials they used were mostly reclaimed from a demolition project they had and from what they can get online. Alyssa Craft and Jesse Stafford are building a home for themselves currently, in the meantime they built the cabin as an addition to a trailer they had on the property. A wood stove heats the entire cabin and the adjoining trailer. The also decided to replace the reclaimed windows they found with clear plastic roofing tiles because they fit more with the look they were going for. The cabin is well insulated and very sturdy allowing for comfortable temperatures in the harshest days of winter.
This is just a small step to their final goal of sustainable, money-free living. Their plans involve a larger home, a well, a septic system and solar panels for energy as well as growing all their own food. A nice way they can relax and unwind is the wood fired hot tub they have built. Most off-grid projects can be very expansive, but the couple has shown everyone that with improvisation and creativity, free and cheap materials you can start off really cheap and have more resources for bigger projects down the line.
