Text description provided by the architects. These small cabins are built specifically for the environment they are in. All the design decisions are made either to enhance the experience of nature or to shield from it. The goal behind the project is to allow people to stay close to nature but feel comfortable while doing it.
The cabins are completely off-grid and are situated on a private island. The point was to make them as simple as possible to help construction and to bring the experience closer to nature.
All the timber used for the frame was sourced from timber that grows around the cabin, namely Norway Spruce. The whole building is lifted from the ground to pay nature respect and lower the footprint as much as possible.
The name 72h cabins refers to the amount of time five people stayed in this cabins for a study that measured stress. The people had drastically lowered stress after the study concluded.
There are a few millimeters of space between the boards on the walls and the ceiling. This is done to increase ventilation. Because of the glass used, the cabins can become very hot when exposed to direct sunlight. This is solved by the ventilation and indoor and outdoor temperature are mostly even. Anyway this place is not meant for daytime activities but mostly for staring at the beautiful sky at night.
The highlight of these cabins is definitely the see-through ceiling. You do not block the sky as you would when you zip up a tent, you just crawl into a very comfy bed and enjoy the starry sky.
Most of the floor is dominated by the bed. There is storage underneath it and just enough sitting space to allow for changing the covers.
Behind the bed, the shelves are actually something that was used in the construction of the cabin to screw on the boards on the walls, they were made deliberately longer to have this unique dual purpose.
If you want to stay in one of these cabins you can head over online and book them. The original is on the island Henriksholm but there will be more available in several different locations too. If you’d want one of these for yourself the company who builds them, Fridh & Hell Bygg will sell one to you but only if you place it in a unique and scenic location.
